At Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet, the hum of machines and beeps from monitors fill the paediatric intensive care unit. Among the life-saving technology and skilled healthcare professionals, a Norwegian invention is quietly making a difference: the Sleepytroll Baby Rocker.

How Sleepytroll Supports Babies in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

It all started when some parents brought their own Sleepytrolls to the PICU. The nursing staff noticed that the babies relaxed faster and settled more easily, and that the gentle rocking provided comfort during long nights when parents are encouraged to get some sleep.

A Nurse’s Perspective on Baby Comfort and Sleep in Intensive Care

Ingeborg Brevik, intensive care nurse at the PICU, explains:

“At the PICU, we care for the sickest children in the country, many of them newborns and infants. We see that most of these little ones, when they’re not in an induced coma, benefit from being rocked to sleep. That can be very time-consuming when we also have medications and other treatments to manage.

Some parents have brought Sleepytroll with them, and we’ve seen that it’s a fantastic aid, especially at night, when we recommend that parents sleep in a proper bed, since rest is so important for them to cope in such a stressful situation.”

Supporting Newborn Development with Gentle Rocking Technology

After seeing the positive results first-hand, Sleepytroll decided to donate several units to the department. Today, they are used daily by the dedicated team at Rikshospitalet to bring calm and comfort to some of the tiniest and most vulnerable patients.

Sleepytroll’s soothing rocking technology has become a trusted tool in the intensive care routine. By gently rocking babies in their strollers and cots at the hospital, it recreates the familiar motion they once felt in the womb. This calming motion helps reduce stress, promotes rest and supports the babies’ development during a critical time.

Benefits of Hands-Free Baby Soothing for Medical Staff and Parents

Medical staff and parents alike have noticed the difference. Sleepytroll provides a reliable, hands-free way to comfort babies, giving nurses more time to focus on essential medical care. For parents, it’s reassuring to know their little ones are being soothed even when they can’t be by their side around the clock.

Sleepytroll’s Mission: Bringing Comfort to the Most Vulnerable Babies

“We’re proud to be part of such meaningful work, helping tiny fighters get the gentle care they deserve,” says Isabelle Eken, Marketing Manager at Sleepytroll.
